MANCHESTER, England -- Chelseas winning start to the Premier League was ended by a dramatic goal from one of its greatest ever players while Manchester Uniteds all-star attack was undermined by its jittery defence in a 5-3 loss at Leicester on Sunday. Frank Lampard struggled to contain his emotions after grabbing 10-man Manchester Citys 85th-minute equalizer in a 1-1 draw against Chelsea, the team which released the former England midfielder this summer after his club-record 211 goals in 13 years at Stamford Bridge. "It is a special and weird day," said Lampard, who was applauded before and after the game by Chelseas travelling support. Lampard was talking about his own experience but he could easily have been summing up an afternoon full of surprises in Englands top division, which finished with Chelsea holding a three-point lead after five games. Surprise home defeats by Tottenham and Everton were upstaged by an implosion from Manchester United, which conceded four goals in 20 minutes to lose a Premier League game for the first time after holding a two-goal lead. Robin van Persies header and Angel Di Marias exquisite chip put United 2-0 ahead after 16 minutes and Ander Herrera regained the teams two-goal cushion at 3-1 in the 57th minute. However, penalties by David Nugent and Leonardo Ulloa -- the second after Tyler Blacketts sending-off -- came either side of goals by Esteban Cambiasso and Jamie Vardy as Uniteds defence fell apart at King Power Stadium. "How is it possible to give this game away?" said United manager Louis van Gaal, whose side has five points from five games despite a spending spree of $250 million over the summer. West Bromwich Albion beat Spurs 1-0 through James Morrisons goal to climb off the bottom of the standings and Crystal Palace also grabbed a first win of the season, defeating Everton 3-2 at Goodison Park. Lampard was cheered onto the field by Chelsea fans as he entered as a substitute in the 78th minute, with City a man and a goal down and seeking an unlikely way back into the game. Pablo Zabaleta was sent off in the 66th for receiving a second booking and Chelsea capitalized within five minutes when substitute Andre Schuerrle tapped in at the far post from Eden Hazards cross. Chelsea, which ditched the flamboyance that characterized its opening four wins, failed to see the match out and after Diego Costa hit the post for the visitors, Lampard arrived with a trademark late run into the box to side-foot home James Milners knockdown. Lampard -- keeping his head down -- held his arm out in an attempt to hold off the advances of his joyous City teammates and didnt celebrate the goal. "It was a difficult day for me at the end because what do you do?" Lampard said. "Youre caught in the middle." Lampards first goal for City overshadowed strong words by City manager Manuel Pellegrini, who described Chelsea as a "small team" because of what he perceived as defensive tactics. "I think we played against exactly the same team we played against Stoke here," Pellegrini added, referring to his teams 1-0 loss to Stoke in Citys last home game. City is without a win in four games in all competitions and stayed five points behind Chelsea. United now has the attack to mount a challenge to return to the top four, with Di Maria scoring for the second straight match with a brilliant scoop over the goalkeeper from 16 yards (meters) and Van Persie heading in from Radamel Falcaos cross. Falcao made his first start for United since his loan move from Monaco, with Juan Mata dropping out of the team. But how United could do with some of the defenders on show at Citys Etihad Stadium. For only the sixth time in Premier League history, United conceded five goals to highlight the glaring inadequacy in Van Gaals team after his summer of lavish spending on mostly attacking players. "We exploited their weaknesses and we got the result," said Leicester striker Vardy, who earned both penalties and put his team 4-3 ahead on a rapid counter-attack. Paul Millsap Jersey . Allen Iverson Jersey . Nat Borchers headed in the sole goal in the 54th minute, getting on the end of a Kyle Beckerman free kick. The defeat cost Sporting top spot in the Eastern Conference. Even a draw would have moved the Kansas City club above Columbus. Will Barton Jersey . Rockies manager Walt Weiss was unhappy, too. Weiss addressed the issue in a 15-minute meeting with his pitcher and catcher after the Rockies gave up 14 hits and lost 10-1. De La Rosa lasted only 4 1-3 innings and allowed five runs in his first opening-day start. CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Cam Newton wasnt flawless on Sunday. He didnt need to be. Newton threw for one touchdown and ran for another to overcome a shaky start, the defence intercepted Matt Ryan three times and the Carolina Panthers beat the Atlanta Falcons 34-10 for their fourth straight victory. Offensive tackle Jordan Gross was more impressed with Newton on Sunday than in the previous three games in which the third-year quarterback played near-perfect ball. "There were times today where he could have gotten rattled," Gross said. "He took some shots and had some turnovers, but he didnt (get rattled). He kept on swinging." Newton entered on quite a streak, completing 77 per cent of his passes with eight touchdowns -- six passing and two rushing -- and no turnovers in his previous three games. But he had two first half interceptions and wasnt sharp on his deep balls, regularly overthrowing his receivers. "He got a little carried away early on and tried to make things happen," Panthers coach Ron Rivera said. "The ball sailed a little bit on him today and when hes doing that its because hes anxious. Hes excited. He wants to do well. Its unfortunate that he didnt bring the ball down a little bit because there were some big plays left out there." Still, Newton bounced back to throw for 249 yards, including a 14-yard touchdown pass to tight end Greg Olsen, and also scored on an 8-yard run. Newton called his play "unacceptable." "I didnt put my best foot forward in the first half," he said. But his teammates were quick to back him up. "Everybody gets wrapped up in stats and quarterback ratings and yards per catch or whatever," Olsen said. "At the end of the day, when you go out and you win 34-10 and you are the quarterback -- you did your job." The Panthers (5-3) pulled within a game of the New Orleans Saints, who lost to the New York Jets. Fullback Mike Tolbert scored his fifth touchdown in the last four games on a 4-yard burst and cornerback Drayton Florence intercepted Ryan and returned it 38 yards for a score to seal the win. At 2-6, the Falcons post-season hopes are fading fast. The Falcons continued to struggle without Julio Jones and Roddy White. Tony Gonzalez had six catches for 81 yards and a touchdown but the running game continues to struggle as Steven Jackson and company were held to a combined 78 yards on the ground. The Panthers defence liimited Ryan to 219 yards and forced four turnovers -- three interceptions.dddddddddddd "I know Matt. Hes going to look at this film. Hes going to obsess over it," Gonzalez said. "I have no doubt hes going to bounce back." The Panthers got a huge break early in the fourth quarter. Leading 17-10, Carolinas Brandon LaFell broke free in Atlanta territory for a big gain but had the ball punched out from behind by cornerback Asante Samuel. The Falcons had a chance to recover, but the ball bounced right back into LaFells arms while he was on the ground. Newton scored on an 8-yard run on the next play to give Carolina a 24-10 lead with nine minutes remaining. "When youre winning, things happen in your favour," LaFell said. "With all of the bad luck around here last year, that thing would have been lost. We got the luck of the bounce." The Panthers put the game away on the next possession when Florence stepped in front of Ryans pass in the flat and returned it for the score -- the first "pick 6" allowed by the Falcons since 2010, a span of 47 games. "If you play sports long enough, there will be ups and downs, and waves throughout that," Ryan said. "Ive played poorly before, but its about trying to stop that at one, and moving on. I wasnt able to do that." Carolina led 14-10 at halftime despite the two interceptions by Newton. Newtons 13-quarter streak of turnover-free football ended when he went long for Ted Ginn Jr. and was intercepted by Desmond Trufant in the second quarter. Newton turned it over again in the final seconds of the first half on an interception by rookie Robert Alford in the back of the end zone, ending a golden scoring opportunity. Atlantas only touchdown of the game came when Ryan hooked up on a 17-yard strike with Gonzalez in the back of the end zone. The Falcons might have had more, but Steven Jacksons 2-yard touchdown run was nullified on a holding penalty on lineman Garrett Reynolds forcing the Falcons to settle for a Matt Bryant field goal. NOTES: The Panthers lost starting right guard Chris Scott and backup Jeff Byers to injuries on Sunday, forcing them to use former defensive tackle Nate Chandler at that spot. ... The Panthers have led at halftime in all eight games this season. ... Jonathan Stewart had 43 yards rushing on nine carries and 22 yards receiving on three catches in his first game this season for the Panthers.
