MONTREAL - Alex Galchenyuk is showing that he wants to establish himself as a top offensive player for the Montreal Canadiens. The gifted 20-year-old scored the tying goal with 3:09 left in regulation time and David Desharnais got the game-winner in overtime as the Canadiens downed the Detroit Red Wings 2-1 on Tuesday night. The goal was Galchenyuks third of the season and gave him seven points in as many games for Montreal (6-1-1), which has won three home games in a row.The American-born forward had a running physical battle with Detroit defenceman Kyle Quincey for two periods before potting his goal. In his first two NHL seasons, he might have backed away from such encounters, but not any more.I had a great summer of training, said Galchenyuk, who was picked third overall in the 2012 draft for his speed and playmaking skills. I got stronger and I feel more confident physically. You want to start the year feeling comfortable with yourself because like that you can do more things on the ice. Physicality is not an issue for me right now.Henrik Zetterberg, with an assist from Pavel Datsyuk, scored in the second frame for Detroit (3-1-2).Galchenyuk is thriving on Montreals second line with veteran centre Tomas Plekanec and newcomer P.A. Parenteau. He tied the game with each team down a man when he came out from behind the net and stuffed the rubber inside the post past Jimmy Howard, who appeared to lose sight of the puck.Only 56 seconds into overtime, Desharnais poked the puck in from the side of the net after blasts from Max Pacioretty and P.K. Subban didnt get through. Both Howard and Montreals Carey Price shone in a tight checking game in which Montreal outshot the Red Wings 36-28. Detroit looked to be the better team for two periods, smothering the Canadiens in the neutral zone before going on attack. But Montreal had a 13-5 shot advantage in the third and it seemed only a matter of time before the equalizer would come.Their back end really got active, Detroit coach Mike Babcock said of the Canadiens. And Carey price plays the puck really well and that helped them a lot. Were a quick team, but in the last 10 minutes, we were hanging on instead of pushing.Babcock was also concerned with his power play, which went 0 for 3 and is 2 for 23 on the season.Weve got to get our power play fixed, he said. It was the fifth time the Canadiens have overcome an early deficit to win this season. Were just relentless, said Price. That pretty much sums it up.We dont feel were out of any hockey game, so we just keep working and coming at you. We feel if we do that it will pay off.Datsyuk returned from a shoulder injury to play his first game of the season. He got 18:05 of ice time and one shot on goal. But he was involved in the Zetterberg goal. The three-time Selke Trophy winner picked himself up after being knocked down at centre ice and got the puck to the Swede on the right side.Zetterberg broke in, cut to the left and saw his low shot go off goalie Price, the crossbar and defenceman Subban and go into the net at 13:41 of the second frame. And the 36-year-old Datsyuk showed he still has some magic when the Red Wings had one called back 11:51 into the third. The Russian was on a two on one break when he spun in the slot and put the puck in the top corner with a backhander, but the spectacular goal was waived off because Justin Abdelkader had bumped Price in his crease.Babcock said Price initiated the contact with Abdelkader and the goal should have counted, but Price saw it differently.Datsyuk made a great move coming into the middle and Abdelkader was just going to the front of the net, said Price. He stopped at the top of the crease and bumped into me.I couldnt see anything. He turned me sideways a bit and I didnt even see Datsyuk shoot the puck. Its the referees discretion, and Im definitely not going to argue with him.Notes — The Canadiens scratched rookie Jiri Sekac and put Dale Weise back in after a two-game rest. Judo bronze medallist Ronda Rousey takes on wrestling silver medallist Sara McMann in the main event of UFC 170 on Saturday night. Former U.S. Olympic wrestler Daniel Cormier headlines the undercard against UFC newcomer Patrick Cummins. Two female Olympians have never met in the UFC octagon, and Rousey jumped on the chance to accomplish another MMA first, even if its just 56 days after she was booed out of the octagon for refusing to shake hands after her last victory over Miesha Tate. "Im super stoked, and its even better its happening with the Sochi Winter Olympics," Rousey said. "It just seems like this is the absolute perfect time for it to happen." Rousey (8-0) has become one of mixed martial arts biggest stars since her UFC debut in February 2013, and shell soon be a movie star as well. But Rousey realizes she owes her fame and fortune to judo, which took her around the world and eventually to the Beijing Olympics six years ago. With her victory over Tate on Dec. 28 still fresh in her mind, Rousey returns at the Mandalay Bay Events Center against McMann (7-0), who won silver in freestyle wrestling at the Athens Games in 2004. "Its a big challenge," Rousey said. "Its the biggest one Ive had to this day. I think its showing how quickly the womens division is progressing. The men, theyve had a lot of Olympians and guys with Olympic backgrounds competing before, but this is the first time weve had two undefeated Olympic medallists fighting for a title." Rouseys Olympic experience defines everything she does in MMA. Her judo skills have been her defining strength in the octagon, where she grabs and throws opponents to the canvas seemingly at will before landing her signature armbar submission on every fighter she has ever faced. She also learned the discipline necessary to be successful in MMA from the decidedly unglamorous world of judo, where internal politics eventually soured hher on the sport.ddddddddddddAfter she picked up MMA a few years ago, she found it suited her perfectly. Its much the same story for McMann, who wasnt sure what to do after her wrestling career until she found a new sport. "I do it for different reasons, but (Rousey and McMann) come from sports where you dont really make any money," said McMann, who has a young daughter. "Youre just doing it because of love of doing it," she added. "But at some point, when you have to work full-time and you have a family, you cant do all those things. There are just not enough hours in the day. So if you can do what you love to do and train professionally and then spend time with your family, thats an awesome, rare thing to be able to do." Cormier has a similar story, taking his first professional MMA fight in 2009 only after making two Olympic wrestling teams and winning gold at the Pan-Am Games. After winning his first two UFC fights as a heavyweight, he has dropped down to light heavyweight to avoid having to fight his teammate, UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez. Rashad Evans was scheduled to meet Cormier at UFC 170, but dropped out with a leg injury 10 days ago, opening the door for Cummins, who had to quit his job as a barista to take the fight on late notice. Rousey isnt worried about the quick turnaround after her third-round victory over Tate in the UFCs holiday show. That fight was her first in 10 months after taking time off to film the latest sequels in the "Expendables" and "Fast and Furious" franchises. "The movie stuff was fun, but by the time it was over, I was glad," Rousey said. "Thats why its good to do the movie stuff and fighting. By the time I was done filming, I was so ready to get back to the gym. I was sitting around Bulgaria, thinking, Man, I miss my gym." And Rousey insists she isnt plotting her escape from the sport, even while shes getting more calls for more movies and entertainment jobs. "Im a fighter," she said. "Thats why anyone in Hollywood is even interested in me at all."
